Abstract (English)

Innovation from a Prophetic Perspective through the Hadith “Whoever Introduces a Good Practice in Islam” and Its Contemporary Applications

This research examines the concept of innovation from a Prophetic perspective through the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: “Whoever introduces a good practice in Islam will have its reward and the reward of those who act upon it until the Day of Resurrection.” The study considers this Hadith as a foundational legal and intellectual basis for constructive innovation and guided renewal within the framework of Islamic law.

The research addresses a contemporary problem represented in the widespread confusion between praiseworthy innovation and blameworthy religious innovation (bid‘ah). This confusion has led some people to reject everything new, while others accept every novelty without proper criteria. Therefore, the study seeks to clarify the Islamic principles that shape a balanced understanding of innovation.

Using inductive, analytical, and deductive methodologies, the research investigates relevant Prophetic texts, analyzes their meanings, and derives general principles applicable to modern issues. It concludes that innovation in the Islamic perspective refers to every beneficial renewal that achieves a legitimate interest, removes harm, facilitates goodness, or serves society, provided that it does not contradict clear religious texts or alter acts of worship that are divinely prescribed.

The study distinguishes between positive innovation and condemned bid‘ah. Praiseworthy innovation concerns worldly means, tools, systems, and methods that help realize the objectives of Shariah, while blameworthy innovation refers to introducing unauthorized religious practices intended as acts of worship.

The research also highlights that Islamic civilization historically embraced beneficial innovation, such as the compilation of the Qur’an, administrative systems, currency organization, and institutional development. These examples demonstrate the flexibility of Islamic law and its ability to accommodate changing circumstances through principles such as public interest (maslahah mursalah) and the higher objectives of Shariah.

Furthermore, the study presents modern applications of this Prophetic concept in areas such as digital technology, healthcare, charitable platforms, voluntary work, and beneficial media content. Examples include online educational platforms, zakat applications, medical assistive technologies, and knowledge-based digital initiatives.

The study concludes that innovation is not foreign to Islam but rather an authentic civilizational value. Contemporary Muslim societies are in urgent need of reviving this concept within proper ethical and legal boundaries in order to promote progress, overcome intellectual stagnation, and build a future that harmonizes authenticity with modernity.
